2025 is off to a great start for Future Generations!
The year 2025 has barely begun and it is already full of events for the Future Generations coalition! A delegation from the Future Generation Initiative had the opportunity to meet the cabinet of Glenn Micallef, European Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness. This first exchange was very fruitful and we look forward to working closely with the Commissioner and his team to support a fairer future for all generations.

Check out the Briefing Book we prepared for Mr Micallef – a carefully curated document that outlines key concepts, legal arguments, existing good practices, and methodological examples in the field of Future Generations—an all encompassing summary of the field.
Spotlight on: The Human Rights of Future Generations
While climate change, resource depletion and global inequalities threaten the rights of future generations, the Commentary on the Maastricht Principles on the Human Rights of Future Generations provides an original framework for addressing these issues.
Developed over 6 years with inputs from 200 experts, the document is a crucial contribution to the evolving legal and ethical discourse on intergenerational justice and sustainability.
Future Generations discussed at the Portuguese Parliament
On December 16, Oikos, a member of the Future Generations Initiative (FGI), partnered with Portuguese organizations Zero and Rede para o Decrescimento (since then members and supporters of FGI) to host a high-level event in the Portuguese Parliament titled “Think About Future Generations and Act in the Present.” The morning session focused on the potential adoption of a Future Generations Law in Portugal, with input from MPs across different parties and insights from the Welsh model, which introduced such legislation in 2015. Filipe Martins SJ, Director of JESC, highlighted FGI’s key achievements, including our role in the establishment of the first-ever EU Intergenerational Fairness Commissioner.
