As the next parliamentary term begins with the Commission hearings, the Future Generations Initiative will host an event to introduce MEPs and other attendees to the concept of Future Generations as a framework for addressing long-term challenges in EU legislation.

An EU Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness

Ursula von der Leyen presented the list of commissioners-designate and their portfolios. For the first time, a Commissioner might be given responsibility for intergenerational fairness and ‘ensure that decisions are taken with future generations in mind’. The Maltese Glenn Micallef has been designated for such a post which also covers Youth, Culture and Sport.

UN Pact for the Future adopted

On Sunday 22, during the Summit of the Future, world leaders meeting at the United Nations headquarters in New York adopted the Pact for the Future.

The Pact includes the annexed Declaration on Future Generations, focusing on guaranteeing the well-being of future generations, while emphasising the need to include their interests in decision-making processes.

More info: Representing the rights of Future Generations in the legislative work of the EU is an opportunity that brings a long-term perspective to our political thinking in the age of the poly-crisis. Europe was always a long-term journey, never complete but an ongoing experiment in political imagination. Are we on the pathway we want to take? What future are we building for our children and grandchildren? In the age of climate change, rapid digital transformation, geopolitical uncertainty and environmental destruction the fate of Future Generations is increasingly uncertain.
