What will a Commissioner for Future Generations look like?
We tried to answer this question by drafting a mission letter. The new role of Executive Vice-President for Future Generations is designed to safeguard the interests of future generations—a defining challenge of our era. This mission includes leading efforts on intergenerational justice, policy coordination, sustainable economic models, and global leadership on long-term sustainability.

Europe must give Future Generations a seat at the table
‘The decision to appoint a European Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness could transform EU governance and ensure that representation of the interests of future generations mitigates policymakers’ short-termism. But to fulfill its mandate, this new authority must have adequate support and clearly defined responsibilities.’

More info: The event will provide MEPs at the beginning of their term with an overview of the rights of Future Generations as a frame to address long-term challenges in EU legislation. On the week of the United Nations Summit of the Future, 23-27, September, and in the context of upcoming Commissioner-candidate hearings this event will act as a helpful briefing and introduction on the concept of Future Generations.
