Meeting with the Cabinet of Commissioner Micallef

On January 16, 2025, representatives from the Future Generations Initiative, including JESC, The Good Lobby, CRIN, GCE, and YouthProAktiv, had the opportunity to meet with the Cabinet of Commissioner Mr. Micallef.

The meeting was highly productive, with Intergenerational Fairness recognized as a flagship issue within the Commissioner’s portfolio. The Cabinet expressed a strong willingness to collaborate with various stakeholders, including citizens and a broad range of civil society organizations, signalling a potential unified and horizontal approach to this critical issue.

During the meeting, we were honoured to present the Briefing Book we prepared for Mr Micallef – a carefully curated document that outlines key concepts, legal arguments, existing good practices, and methodological examples in the field of Future Generations—key insights that drive our work.

We hope that the document will shape the perspective of the new commissioner and will inform the Strategy on Intergenerational Fairness that the Cabinet is currently developing.

The Briefing Book is now available for download and offers valuable insights on several crucial topics:

  1. European Union law in protection of Future Generations – What legal basis is available in the EU to ensure the rights of Future Generations are not compromised?
  2. The perspective of international law: the EU has now a historic opportunity – The UN Summit of the Future, international momentum, and the EU’s opportunity to create a lasting legacy.
  3. Guardians of Future Generations in Europe and Beyond – Examples of existing methodologies, institutions, and approaches that already champion the rights of Future Generations across various EU countries.
  4. Children, Youth and Future Generations – The overlaps and differences between generations, and why Future Generations need a distinct form of representation in legislation.
  5. A Workplan for Future Generations – Proposed actions and tools for Mr Micallef in the next political cycle.

As we left the meeting, we felt energized and motivated, eager to continue collaborating with Mr. Micallef’s Cabinet to help shape a future that values the rights of Future Generations.

We look forward to an ongoing partnership and contributing to the success of the Intergenerational Fairness strategy and beyond.
