The European Commission’s intergenerational strategy is a new initiative designed to ensure that the decisions made today do not harm future generations and foster stronger solidarity between people of all ages. In 2025 the strategy is still in a consultative and co-creation phase, led by the Joint Research center (JRC) of the European Commission. The final document is anticipated in the first half of 2026.
There are still multiple opportunities to influence the process:
1. Citizen engagement platform
An open platform where citizens can submit their vision for the future of the EU.
The Commission´s formal procedure invites stakeholders to submit their reactions to the strategy. The call is expected to open in the second half of September and is typically welcoming interventions for 4 weeks. (the exact date will be published soon.)
3. Strategy scoping calls with the JRC – scheduled for Sept 8, Sept 19, Sept 26, Oct 3.
This format allows for more active engagement and real-time discussion of the strategy’s key questions. It involves approximately 100 contributors and is happening online. If you are interested in participating, reach out and we can connect you with the responsible person at JRC.
The European Citizen´s Panel on Intergenerational Fairness is another significant event taking place this fall. Over three weekends, 150 randomly selected citizens will discuss and share their views on the topic. The panel is a hybrid event, with two in-person sessions in Brussels and one online. FGI is a member of the knowledge committee responsible for preparing the panel’s methodology and answering participants’ questions.
To support the process, FGI has formulated its core principles that we believe should form the building blocks of the strategy. Two of them have already been published, with two more ready to be soon.
